Whatever happened to Tape Worm

with 2 comments

Tape Worm
It all started with the IEEE workshop in the end of September when it was decided that 5 people abhimanu (shabby), Shankar, Me ( Ankur /OS ), Nikhil and Shantanu will be there in my team and then after few class everything was over, we never decided on what exactly are we going to make and then suddenly on 9th out of nowere i came with an idea of making a bot while talking with ankit and then it all started and i found that i was the only one working on it and the team mates were nowere to be seen, so with little mutual help from ankit we started with it, the fact that ankit was also going to participate in that helped us, we selected the designs got the material ( some insane trips to Udupi ) and acctually made it in 2 days. I used 4 pepsi can for the design so i got to drink 4 pepsi’s 😉 and a lot of Tape thus TAPE WORM was born, ankit went for some strange name of UGLY DUCKLING which actually sounded cool at that time.

But it was all same in the end, we participated and enjoyed a lot, there were some 40 teams and only 8 made it to the second round  ( with huge question marks on a lot of people’s face ) and we didnt but well we were so close to almost making it, anyway i am ready for the next time ……………..

Problem with Gtalk in Kopete

leave a comment »

some people have trouble connecting to Gtalk on Kopete here is hoe to do it.
Open Kopete go to Settings>>configure>>accounts
Add a new Jabber account.
Enter your complete Google Mail address and corresponding password.
go to the Connection page of the dialog.
check “Use protocol encryption (SSL)” checkbox
check “Allow plain-text password authentication” checkbox
check “override default server information” checkbox
and set server to “talk.google.com port 5223
If you are behind a firewall and can’t connect to the 5223 port you can use the 443 port (standard SSL port).

there you are all set to connect and enjoy
NOTE :- if you recive some sort of SSL errors just install the qca-tls package by ‘sudo apt-get install qca-tls’ in debian/Ubuntu

Using Wifi in Ubuntu on HP 6515b (broadcom)

with 5 comments

so after the install the thing that is left is the WiFi support so here it goes
first disable the bcm43xx driver
sudo rmmod bcm43xx
then black list the driver by adding “balcklist bcm43xx” in
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
then download diswrapper-utils-1.9 deb file and install it offline or if you have a LAN connection, For the next step you should have a copy of the windows driver on HDD or flash drive and type
sudo ndiswrapper -i /the location of windows driver/bcmwl5.inf
now check if driver is there or not
sudo ndiswrapper -l
you should get a output like
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4312) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)

then type
sudo ndiswrapper -m
to write wlan0 to ndiswrapper, then you need to start ndiswrapper type
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
Now you just need to enable ndiswrapper to start on boot, for that add “ndiswrapper” in /etc/modules
sudo gedit /etc/modules
all done enjoy

Using Ubuntu on HP 6515b ( ATI X1250 )

with 31 comments

So there are a lot of people having trouble installing Linux ( Ubuntu ) on those ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 or any other ATI card here is the solution ( i have given this example with ubuntu but it can be used with any other Linux distro ) first go to ATI’s site and download the driver then all we have to do is boot into your linux distro and just install the drivers, for that we will first need a copy of the drivers on HDD or flash drive, and then just cd into that directory and type
sh ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run
where ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run is the name of the driver file with me, it will start the install procedure just follow that and after the install just configure your resolution with
aticonfig --resolution=0,1280x800
as my resolution was 1280×800 your can be 1024×786 or some other just type what ever it is.
after this we just need to start the X server again type startx and enjoy every thing in graphical mode.

Note:- if you used a Live CD you will have to install the drivers 2 times first for the live CD and then for your system, enjoy!!!
